I froze on stage. Ten years apart.

The fear doesn't go away. It never does.

Ten years ago I froze on stage for eight minutes.

Not a pause. Not a stumble. Eight minutes of standing there, mind completely blank, in front of 100 colleagues.

My boss had to come up and put his arm around me. Handed me a bottle of water.

It was the most humiliating moment of my professional career.

A few years ago I ran a session for EGR Power 50. I had prepared for weeks. Room full. And I froze again.

Nerves got to me. Didn't say half of what I wanted to say.

But every hand in the room went up when I asked who'd walked away with an insight.

The EGR team told me afterwards they'd been looking for this level of interactivity between their guests for seven years.

So I froze. And it still worked.

The fear doesn't go away. It never does.

But ten years ago I couldn't get through the first two minutes.

That day, I got through the whole thing.

That's progress.

Two days later I went again, for EGR Power Affiliates. Said half of what I wanted to say the first time.

Showing up again is the only answer I've got.

Leadership is lonely. It doesn't have to be.
