But the kids came off that pitch as if they'd won the trophy.
Six matches. Five losses.
In two of the games the ref even came over to ask if I wanted to stop the game. We didn't. We kept going.
After the last game, you'd have thought they'd come off a final.
Because they had played the best rugby of their lives.
Not better than usual. Better than they knew was in them.
In Gibraltar, we have one team. Same kids. Same matches. Same level of intensity. They're good. They're as good as they need to be to win at home.
Then you stick them on a pitch with teams from deep down the valleys, and something changes.
Our kids didn't get worse. They got better.
Not because they tried harder. Because they were surrounded by a higher standard.
You rise to the level of your environment.
It's the same for senior leaders in our industry. But their surroundings never change. Same conferences. Same network. Same conversations.
The question isn't whether you're working hard enough.
It's whether you have the people around you who hold you to a higher standard.
